WorkVoyage: A Playful Survey for Evaluating Quality of Work Life

This study outlines the design, development, user experience testing, and psychometric assessment of the survey ’WorkVoyage’, developed for the evaluation of Quality of Work Life (QWL) in a playful way. The developed playful survey consisted of 21 items. The survey was developed through four stages. The full procedure included 184 participants (stage 1: n=32, Stage 2: n=95, Stage 3: n=7, Stage 4: n=50). We found that WorkVoyage had very high reliability (McDonald’s ω = 0.87) and served as a good way for screening QWL in working environments. Factorial analyses indicate that, according to our theory, one-factor accounting for general QWL was generated. Standard measures for the scale were also generated, with a mean raw score of \(\overline{x}=596.29\) and a standard deviation of σ = 160.47. Finally, the study participants found WorkVoyage to be an innovative and engaging way of gathering information. However, the participants also reported some challenges, such as having problems interacting with the playful survey due to its innovative nature. The development of a playful survey opens a new strand of testing and evaluation, where the use of playful experiences can lead to more engagement than regular or gamified questionnaires.
