Study of Valves and Performance Parameters Quantification for SMART Valves Control System
The Strategic Management Analysis Requirement and Technology (SMART) are used to modernize hydraulic systems in the existing nuclear power plants (NPPs) and to develop thermal extraction and dispatch capabilities. These advancements aim to diversify revenue streams and improve plant safety. To support this effort, the study examines the requirements and functions of nuclear valves and identifies four types for detailed analysis. Gate valves demonstrate suitability for on-off operations, while butterfly, ball, and globe valves are identified as effective for throttling. The evaluation of these valves under NPP conditions (350 °C and 6 MPa) indicates that thermal stress is as important as the pressure-induced stress. The study quantifies performance parameters for the throttling valves and generates datasets that correlate valve positions, inlet velocities, and key performance metrics, including Cv and K, for steam and water flow. The findings establish the minimum actuation ranges for the valves, with butterfly valves requiring 30°, ball valves 45°, and globe valves 33.33%. These results provide essential insights for optimizing the operation of hydraulic systems in NPPs.
