Artificial Intelligence Will Not Lead to an Orwellian Dystopia: A Philosophical and Ethical Reflection Based on MIT Research

Recent reports from the MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT Task Force on Work of the Future suggest that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is more likely to complement rather than replace human beings. This paper argues, from both ethical and philosophical perspectives, that the development of AI does not inevitably lead to an Orwellian dystopia as envisioned in Nineteen Eighty-Four. Instead, the evolution of AI marks a new phase of cooperative intelligence, where human creativity, empathy, and ethical reasoning remain indispensable. We examine how the concept of human–machine complementarity forms the foundation of a new AI ethics, emphasizing responsibility, transparency, and philo- sophical humanism.
