'Jean'
This short story in Scots entitled 'Jean' envisages the Drunk Man, the protagonist of Hugh MacDiarmid 1926 poem A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle, in a care home approaching his centenary. He has Alzheimer's but clearly still has a vibrant inner spirit. The heroes of the story are women: his deceased wife Jean; Eilidh, the Drunk Man's great granddaughter; and Qamar (meaning 'moon'), a care home assistant who works nights.
