When and Why is Hybrid Work Beneficial: Some Implications for Employees, Teams, and Leaders from a Self-Determination Theory Lens

This PhD aims to gain a fuller understanding of the implications of the various elements of hybrid work settings, by studying the processes through which (WHY?) and conditions in which (WHEN?) hybrid work yields positive consequences at the individual and team level. We add to existing research by introducing more fine-grained measures of hybrid work, and by examining both individual and team level outcomes. We furthermore build on self-determination theory (SDT) as an overarching theoretical framework to explain how hybrid work has an impact on employees and teams via basic needs satisfaction. The results of this project will allow us to extend existing knowledge on hybrid work settings and provide organizations with concrete guidelines on how to successfully implement it.
