The Relationship Between Vitamin D Levels and Asthma Control
Abstract Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by inflammation and an abnormal immune response. In addition to taking medication to control symptoms appropriately according to treatment guidelines, supplementing certain vitamins, such as vitamin D, which plays an important role in the immune system may boost asthma control. This article aims to examine the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and asthma control. Studies have shown that individuals with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25(OH)D) levels below 25 - 30 nmol/L tend to experience more severe asthma symptoms and poorer asthma control. The possible mechanisms involve vitamin D’s role in reducing inflammation and enhancing immune function. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation may serve as a potential strategy to help control asthma exacerbations in patients with vitamin D deficiency. Keywords: vitamin D; asthma; symptom control; immune system; inflammation
