Older LGBT+ adults and healthcare - a systematic review
Background
The older LGBT+ patient population is an under-researched group within the Danish healthcare system, however they present with different health problems than their heterosexual counterparts. Older LGBT+ patients have often grown up being discriminated against due to their sexuality, both from society and at times by healthcare professionals. This can lead to a state of minority stress, which can be a contributing factor to a decline in mental health, as well as other lifestyle issues. This systematic review will look at available literature regarding LGBT+ patients meeting with healthcare professionals.
Methods
A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was preformed to analyse available literature regarding older LGBT+’s meeting with healthcare.
Results
Three overall themes were identified: 1) older LGBT+ experiences with discrimination, 2) The importance of older LGBT+ networks as a source of support and 3) A need for further training of healthcare staff.
