Onderzoek naar het gedrag van eerstejaarsstudenten aan de faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde: inzichten uit loggegevens.
In KU Leuven (KUL), for the year 2019, it was estimated that around 12\% of first‐year students dropped out after the first semester and the dropout numbers increased to over 35\% by the end of the academic year. Moreover, students who persevered towards completing their degree took more years to complete a 3‐year degree program. These numbers are in line with the findings from OECD. At the faculty of economics and business, first year courses were to be improved under the ALPACAS project, to induce active learning in students using formative assessment and adaptive release techniques. Log data was extracted under this project from first year courses at FEB to apply Learning Analytics (LA) techniques to find insights for teachers in improving their courses. By leveraging several established and new LA techniques like profiling students, predictions, detecting and visualizing patterns and connections with theoretical concepts, LA can deliver actionable insights. These insights equip instructors in decision making not just in their course design but to program heads and other stakeholders to assess and redesign their programs. A database schema was created to extract a viable dataset from the learning management system at KU Leuven. And further to investigate with some well-established LA techniques on the dataset to find insights for teachers.
