Development and Application of a VR BIM Digital Twin using Unity, IoT Sensor Data and Cave Automatic Virtual Environment

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has driven an increased generation of asset data, facilitated by Internet of Things (IoT) data capture and a widespread digitisation of new and existing processes such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the Digital Twin (DTw). Synchronously, extended reality (XR) technology has surged through increased affordability and applications to the built environment are well documented. This paper describes the development of an informative BIM DTw Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE), for future use in novel comparative experiments. First, the motivation for the BIM DTw CAVE is introduced. Second, the hardware and software arrangements and system architecture are described. Finally, the application, features, and case study for the system are demonstrated, followed by limitations and future research.
