Buy One Get One Free:Sustainability-Enabled Resilience Capabilities

Supply chain (SC) sustainability and resilience are predominantly conceptualized as two independent constructs, resulting in a puzzle regarding the extent to which sustainability and resilience capabilities overlap. With a qualitative document analysis of eight major companies in four industries, we identify sustainability practices that enhance SC resilience capabilities. Theoretically, we offer a phenomenon-driven contribution by shedding light on the interwovenness of sustainability and resilience. Practically, we derive recommendations on how companies can simultaneously improve their sustainability and resilience. Additionally, by demonstrating the resilience benefits of sustainability practices, this study contributes to convincing instrumental-dominant decision-makers to take more sustainable actions.
