Seabirds Under Pressure (SUPRE):Unlocking the potential of beached bird surveys for understanding and alleviating threats to seabird populations in Danish waters
The SUPRE project (2025-28) aims to increase our under-standing of various threats to seabirds in Danish waters.
The Danish waters constitute vital foraging areas, but several seabird species are experiencing declines, which may be caused by multiple pressure factors
such as *climate change and extreme weather events, food web changes, diseases, offshore activities, fishing, and pollution from *marine litter and *hazardous substances.
The focus will be on sensitive key species of seabirds such as auks, kittiwakes, fulmars and gannets.

Activities include:
- Establishment of a citizen science driven beached bird surveys by Birdlife Denmark and local teams of beach surveyors.
- Research into mortality incidences, causes and population genetics of sensitive seabirds and exposure to pollutants e.g. Hg, PFAS, oil, plastic.
- Engagement of citizens and stakeholders on the societal relevance of a clean sea addressing prevention to sea-based sources to pollution.
