Point-of-Care Testing in Primary Care: What’s the Point?

Point-of-care testing (POCT) is rapidly transforming clinical decision-making in primary care. But amidst the enthusiasm for faster diagnostics, it's time to ask: what’s the real point? This interactive workshop, hosted by the WONCA Special Interest Group on Point-of-Care Testing, will explore how to critically assess the value of POCT through the lens of health technology assessment (HTA). Participants will engage in hands-on activities that go beyond accuracy and speed, examining how POCT affects clinical outcomes, patient safety, healthcare costs, and antimicrobial resistance. Through real-world case studies and facilitated dialogue, we will discuss how to balance the promise of innovation with practical implementation, and how evidence from HTA can support decision-making at the front lines of care as well as at the policy level. Join us to exchange experiences, challenge assumptions, and rethink how we define value in point-of-care diagnostics. Learning Objectives: Understand the principles of health technology assessment in the context of POCT. Explore the impact of POCT on patient outcomes, healthcare systems, and sustainability. Identify strategies to support the integration of POCT into primary care practices. Session Format: Interactive Workshop (60 minutes) Target Audience: General practitioners, primary care teams, researchers, and policymakers with an interest in diagnostic innovation, antimicrobial stewardship, and sustainable healthcare.
