Sustaining by Engaging:Roots and itineraries of Boulouki travelling workshop on the Epirus mountains
Since 2018, the interdisciplinary collective Boulouki has acquired an important role in the socio-environmental ecosystem of the Tzoumerka Mountains in Epirus. From stone-masonry workshops and apprenticeships aimed at intergenerational building knowledge transmission, to the gradual, participatory restoration of the abandoned Frasta primary school through annual seminars, and the preservation of ecological corridors for non-human mountain life, Boulouki demonstrates how heritage work and sustainability action can be brought together. This talk will show how Boulouki’s multi-year engagement with mountain communities and their local knowledge creates a counter-example of substantive sustainability in the face of the multiple threats confronting these landscapes.
