Agrivoltaics and Biodiversity - The scarcity of land: how land use conflicts impact biodiversity in Germany and beyond
This presentation introduces the subject of Agrivoltaics (AgriPV) and Biodiversity. The lecture begins by defining biodiversity and outlining the essential values of ecosystem services (ES) that sustain human well-being. It examines the primary threats and drivers of biodiversity decline, highlighting the resulting land-use conflicts and stakeholder pressures. The session details the potential ecological impacts of conventional ground-mounted PV installations. Crucially, the lecture positions Agrivoltaics as a strategic, multi-functional land use management approach designed to mitigate these conflicts. Success factors are presented for designing (Agri)PV plants to ensure they promote biodiversity, particularly through the use of native, site-adapted wild plant seed mixtures. The presentation concludes with an explanation of the AgriPVplus approach, a holistic concept for integrated, biodiversity-enhancing AgriPV, exemplified by two unique demonstrators in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
