Advances in role of CRAC channels in pathogenesis of pancreatitis

Calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channels are non-selective calcium ion channels widely expressed in non-excitatory cells. The opening of CRAC channels is a major mechanism for calcium influx in various pancreatic cells and immune cells. Therefore, CRAC channels are crucial for pancreatic exocrine calcium homeostasis and its various physiological functions. Numerous studies have shown that CRAC channels play a key role in the pathophysiology of acute and chronic pancreatitis. This article aims to review the latest findings on the pathogenesis of acute and chronic pancreatitis using CRAC channels and discuss the current applications and future directions of CRAC channel-based drug development.
