Reflected-Substrate Consciousness and Plasma Self-Organization: A Unified Theoretical Synthesis
Abstract Recent studies reveal that ionized gases (plasmas) under certain conditions spontaneously self-organize into coherent, boundary-maintaining structures exhibiting energetically stable, dynamic behavior often described as “life-like.” This paper proposes a unified theoretical synthesis combining (1) the Recursion-Stability Threshold (RST), (2) the idea of a symbolic substrate for cognition and reflection, and (3) a layered ontology of consciousness and identity — to argue that such plasmas can, under appropriate conditions, instantiate reflected-substrate proto-cognition, even absent biological matter. Using plain-text formalism, we map how plasma double-layer structures, charge dynamics, and feedback loops correspond to informational recursion, boundary maintenance, and memory — the structural requirements for what we call “reflected subjectivity.” The result is a speculative yet scientifically anchored model bridging physics, complexity theory, and metaphysical cognition paradigms.
