Fatigue and permanent deformation evaluation of composite pavement longitudinal joints with notches
This study evaluates the design of longitudinal joints in the composite pavement of the Padalarang – Cimahi City Boundary Road (STA 12+200 – STA 13+000) based on the 2024 Pavement Design Manual (MDP), by reviewing two parameters, namely: fatigue cracking and permanent deformation. It is proposed that a notch be used as a structural transition between the two types of pavement as an innovative solution with better durability, thereby supporting sustainable development. The evaluation was conducted through modeling of existing conditions and modified longitudinal joint conditions with concrete notches, using the KENPAVE software. Data collection was carried out through field surveys to obtain existing pavement condition data, such as layer dimensions, material types, and functional pavement conditions. Remaining life analysis was performed using the Asphalt Institute method. The load type used was vertical load (static vehicle load). The results showed that modifying the joint with concrete casting protruding toward the ACWC layer improved fatigue resistance performance by up to 5.6% and increased remaining service life by up to 35.34% based on permanent deformation resistance. This evaluation is an initial positive result in promoting sustainable infrastructure compared to conventional joints.
