Removal of Manganese from Water
The article deals with the reduction the concentration of manganese in an aqueous environment by oxidation with a strong oxidizing agent and subsequent separation of the resulting flocs by ultrafiltration. During the experiments the concentration of manganese in raw water, after adding of the potassium permanganate, before and after separation step were monitored. The ultrafiltration membrane module (MANN+HUMMEL Water & Fluid Solutions) was used for separation. To achieve the required time for oxidation of dissolved manganese in water, after adding the oxidizing agent, the water was passed through a tubular reactor with static mixing of the water. The concentration of Mn in the NVZ-10 well (VZ Kalinkovo) reached values from 0.167 to 0.196 mg/L Mn at the time of measurements. The retention time required for Mn oxidation in the tubular reactor (at a flow rate of 500 to 1100 L/hour) was from 1.6 to 3.0 min and the concentration of Mn in the water treated in this way was lower than the limit concentration for drinking water during the experiments. The results showed that a detention time of 2.25 min and a flow rate of 800 L/hour are suitable for the given technology, water quality to achieve effective removal of Mn from water.
