Circular Supply Chain Orchestration: A Dynamic Capabilities Framework for International Logistics

Abstract Purpose – The transition from linear to circular economy models in international logistics remains fragmented despite growing sustainability imperatives. This viewpoint examines how dynamic capabilities theory can provide a comprehensive framework for orchestrating circular supply chains across global networks, addressing the critical gap between circular economy principles and practical implementation in international logistics operations. Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual viewpoint synthesizes emerging trends in circular economy implementation, dynamic capabilities theory, and international logistics management. The analysis draws upon current industry transformations, regulatory developments, and theoretical frameworks to propose an integrated orchestration model for circular supply chain management in global contexts. Findings – Circular supply chain orchestration requires a fundamental reimagining of dynamic capabilities across perceiving, capturing, and evolving dimensions. The framework reveals that successful circular implementation depends on developing adaptive capabilities for resource orchestration, stakeholder coordination, and value network reconfiguration. International logistics providers must cultivate new competencies in reverse logistics, materials recovery, and cross-border collaboration to enable circular material flows. Originality – This viewpoint introduces the first comprehensive framework integrating dynamic capabilities theory with circular supply chain orchestration specifically for international logistics contexts. It establishes a novel theoretical foundation for understanding how organizations can systematically develop the capabilities needed to transition from linear to circular logistics models while navigating the intricacies of global operations.
