Design of a MotoGP circuit in Heraklion Crete – a preliminary technical approach
This paper presents a comprehensive study for the design and development of a MotoGP racing circuit on the site of the existing Heraklion Airport (N. Kazantzakis) in Crete, Greece. The opportunity arose due to the relocation of the airport to the new international facility at Kastelli, leaving a significant area of urban land open for redevelopment. The study integrates international standards established by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), Greek national design guidelines (OMOE), and modern digital tools such as Plex Earth and Anadelta Tessera. The methodology includes site evaluation, geospatial data acquisition, and advanced geometric design to ensure compliance with technical, safety, and performance specifications required for high-speed motorcycle racing. Multiple track layouts and pit lane configurations are proposed and analyzed, aiming to optimize both competition quality and spectator experience. Furthermore, the broader impacts of the proposed infrastructure are discussed, including potential benefits for regional tourism, local economy, traffic management, and road safety. The results confirm the feasibility of the project and underscore its multifaceted value, provided that proper environmental and regulatory measures are addressed.
