CFD Analysis of PEM Fuel Cell with Single Serpentine Flow Field

A fuel cell performance analysis was conducted using a three-dimensional proton exchange membrane model with single serpentine flow channel. This model consisting of the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and mass transport are numerically solved by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Considering the cell's performance, the evolution of parameters such as hydrogen and oxygen molar fractions, relative humidity in the channels, water activity and electrolyte conductivity in the membrane has been investigated. The findings indicated that the current density of 10000 A/m2 resulted in increased rates of hydrogen and oxygen consumption, along with a higher rate of water production. Moreover, the performance characteristics of the developed fuel cell model are evaluated by comparing them with the experimental data, demonstrating a favorable concordance. This work constitutes a contribution to the understanding fuel cell operation for enhanced efficiency and reliability in practical applications.
