Jamming transition of connected autonomous vehicles with passing effect integrating visibility impact under adverse weather situation

Connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are an important component of future intelligent transportation. Faced with adverse weather conditions, visibility will inevitably have a significant impact on the information acquisition and overtaking behaviors of CAVs. Accordingly, a novel traffic model is established for CAVs with passing effect integrating visibility impact under adverse weather situation. Based on theoretical analysis, visibility and passing effect are closely related to traffic stability. Moreover, according to simulations, although the reduced visibility can strengthen traffic stability in passing situations for CAVs, traffic flux will correspondingly decrease. This work will lay a solid theoretical foundation for the application of CAVs in harsh weather environments.
