Bapukong Custom, a Banjar Community Tradition Based on Sharia: A Study in the State of Perak Darul Ridzuan
Bapukong is a unique traditional practice among the Banjar community particularly associated with postnatal infant care. This custom involves swaddling and cradling babies in a seated position using batik or sarong cloths with the aim of soothing discomforts such as bloating, mild fever, or general restlessness. The practice is commonly accompanied by the recitation of Islamic prayers, selawat (praises upon the Prophet) and berzanji, thus reflecting not only a cultural ritual but also spiritual elements rooted in Islamic values. This study explores the contemporary application of the Bapukong tradition among the Banjar community in the state of Perak, Malaysia and evaluates its alignment with Islamic legal principles. Using a qualitative methodology comprising field observations and semi-structured interviews, the findings indicate that Bapukong is consistent with the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah), particularly in safeguarding life (ḥifẓ al-nafs) and social harmony. The practice also serves as a symbol of cultural identity that remains intact across generations. This study recommends systematic documentation of Bapukong as an element of local Islamic heritage that harmoniously integrates tradition and religious observance.
