Barriers of service delivery of Spanish-speaking communities with Parkinson disease

Parkinson Disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. This disease manifests itself through a diverse array of symptoms that differ across individuals. There is an attempt of published studies that discuss the barriers of service delivery of Spanish-speaking communities in the realm of health care. However, there is currently minimal research conducted related to the barriers that may persist for individuals that are Spanish-speaking individuals with a diagnosis of PD. Therefore, this study seeks to assess existing research by conducting a literature review of nine articles published between 2011- 2023, focusing on identifying unmet needs and barriers of service delivery faced by Spanish-speaking communities with PD. This review examines various studies, including recruitment methods, procedures, and findings from the analyzed data. The results demonstrate there are barriers in access to care that contribute to ongoing disparities within this population. A key observation is a lack of culturally relevant information for effectively delivering patient education. Additionally, there is a need for culturally sensitive care and resources to improve experiences with healthcare professionals for individuals with PD and their families.
