Foundations of Drive Theory in Working Dogs: A Functional Framework for Modern Canine Training

Abstract:This article provides a scientific and functional analysis of drive theory in working dogs, offering a structured model for understanding motivational systems that govern canine performance. Integrating principles from behavioral neuroscience, operant learning frameworks, and ethology, the paper clarifies the distinctions between prey drive, fight drive, and defense mechanisms while examining their interaction in high-performance working dogs. The proposed framework contributes to a clearer interpretation of drive expressions, enabling trainers and behavior professionals to apply more precise, ethical, and effective training strategies. This work also contextualizes drive theory within modern canine applications including IGP, detection, protection work, and service dog training, highlighting practical implications for assessment, selection, and long-term behavioral conditioning.
