FROM OPPRESSION TO RESILIENCE: UNDERSTANDING FILIPINO AMERICAN MENTAL HEALTH THROUGH COLONIAL AND INDIGENOUS LENSES

This literature review examines the mental health experiences of Filipino Americans, focusing on how colonization affects mental health help-seeking behaviors, attitudes, and acculturation. Colonial mentality (CM), characterized by internalized oppression, is shown to influence negative mental health outcomes. In contrast, Sikolohiyang Pilipino (SP) highlights the significance of indigenous cultural values, particularly kapwa, and advocates for decolonization. This review synthesizes findings related to these constructs, offering a comprehensive understanding of Filipino American mental health outcomes. It emphasizes the need for culturally adaptive research and clinical practices, advocating for decolonization to empower Filipino Americans and improve their mental health.
