Gastrointestinal stromal tumor liver metastasis rupture following yttrium-90 radioembolization: A previously unreported complication
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) commonly arise in the gastrointestinal tract and frequently metastasize to the liver. While medical therapy is the first-line treatment, loco-regional approaches such as selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) may be pursued in refractory cases. Here, we present the case of a 60-year-old woman with a GIST and hepatic metastases who underwent SIRT, which was complicated by tumor rupture. This previously unreported complication necessitated further evaluation to rule out intra-abdominal dissemination of Y90 particles but fortunately did not require additional intervention. This case highlights a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of SIRT for GIST metastases, underscoring the need for vigilance and prompt recognition to guide appropriate management.
