Design and implementation of a scalable machine protection system for the EuAPS particle accelerator

The evolution of research infrastructures in the field of particle accelerators requires increasingly intelligent, integrated and safety-compliant protection systems. In this context, the development of a Machine Protection System (MPS) is underway for the EuAPS project, currently being implemented at the SPARC\_LAB facility of INFN National Laboratories in Frascati. The system is designed as a distributed network based on real-time embedded industrial controllers, with FPGAs on cRIO modules and dedicated devices, and is intended to monitor the operational conditions of critical subsystems such as diagnostics, vacuum and safety in real time, responding promptly in the event of interlocks. The prototype is being developed in accordance with the IEC-61508 standard, including the identification of Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) and a structured strategy encompassing hardware/software design, implementation, verification and validation. The goal is to provide a prototypal, standards-compliant platform that is scalable and suitable for future machine expansions, such as the EuPRAXIA project. In addition to protection, the MPS aims to enhance operational management and prevent critical failures, contributing to a safer, more autonomous, modular and efficient accelerator infrastructure.
