Current state and improvements of the luminescent screen protection system in the Karabo control system at the European XFEL

During startup, maintenance, and the user program, stable beam conditions are crucial for smooth operation of beamlines and instruments at many light sources, including the European XFEL. For visual verification of the beam position and jitter, invasive luminescent screens are mostly used. These screens made of various materials are located at several locations along the beam path and can withstand a particular photon intensity and flux. Excessive intensity within a few x-ray pulses may damage the screen resulting in increased maintenance costs and operational down time. At the European XFEL, to protect these screens, a set of Karabo control system services are deployed. The main functionality of these services includes calculation of screen damage thresholds and the estimation of the actual photon flux. In the case of an overdose the user is warned, the screen is retracted and moved to a predefined safe position. In this contribution the current protection system and upcoming improvements of the optical luminescent screen integration in the Karabo control system at the European XFEL are presented.
