Kabul Quagmire- Interplay of India, Pakistan, and the Taliban

This article examines how Pakistan’s internal fractures and external pressures have fused into a single crisis along the Durand Line after October 2025 border flare-ups. It traces the security dynamic of TTP resurgence inside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the Taliban’s contest with ISKP inside Afghanistan, and the way these narratives shape Pakistani rhetoric, from calling Kabul a “regime” to quietly hosting anti-Taliban figures. It links CPEC security demands, IMF conditionalities, and domestic unrest in KP, Balochistan, PoK and GB to decisions taken at the frontier, showing how every closure at Torkham travels into donor rooms and diaspora politics. The analysis maps the roles of Russia’s recognition, China’s project security, Europe’s rights-tied aid, and the United States’ sanctions, waivers, minerals interest and Central Asia calculus, while highlighting Qatar and Turkey’s shuttle diplomacy that has kept talks alive without delivering peace. It situates India’s calibrated re-entry, humanitarian channels, Chabahar access, embassy upgrade, IWT pressure and deterrent posture, including potential implications of a Kunar dam. The piece argues that coercive Pakistani tactics risk deeper isolation and provincial fatigue, whereas a mediated, transparent, security-deliverables approach could buy limited stability. For India, the situation opens a narrow corridor for practical engagement and deterrence, and, if Pakistan remains tied down westward, a reduced “strategic depth” dividend, albeit at human cost for Afghans and Pashtuns.
