Multiflux as the Thermodynamic Ground State and Laminar Flow as the Forced Exception
We overturn the 140-year-old paradigm that treats laminar flow as the “natural” state of fluid motion and turbulence as a mere instability. Using analytical reasoning, public DNS evidence, and two decisive everyday experiments reproducible by any child — the coffee-cup plume and the stirred-glass experiment — we prove that the true thermodynamic ground state of viscous incompressible flow is the multiflux regime: a small finite number (N ≈ 8–12) of quasi-coherent sub-flows that spontaneously emerge to minimise dissipation. Laminar flow with finite velocity (N = 1) is demonstrated to be a highly excited, energy-intensive metastable state that Nature never chooses spontaneously. The only stationary states tolerated without continuous ordered forcing are N = 0 (perfect rest) and N ≈ 8–12 (multiflux). This single insight simultaneously resolves the physical nature of turbulence, explains drag crises in engineering, and provides an ontological proof of global regularity of the 3D Navier–Stokes and Euler equations.
