Role of Temples in Preserving Tamil Culture
Temples have been integral to the preservation and transmission of Tamil culture for centuries, functioning as epicenters of religious, social, and artistic life. In Tamil Nadu, temples are not merely places of worship, but hubs for cultural expression, safeguarding traditions, rituals, festivals, music, dance, architecture, and literature. This paper explores the multifaceted role of temples in nurturing and preserving Tamil culture, examining their historical significance, their influence on social cohesion, and their contributions to artistic development. It also highlights how temples have acted as institutions of learning and cultural dialogue, preserving classical Tamil texts, fostering religious tolerance, and promoting civic values. By exploring these imensions, the paper argues that Tamil temples have served not only as spiritual centers but also as the backbone of Tamil identity, staining cultural continuity amidst changing socio-political landscapes
