CODES FAQ for Skeptical Scientists_A Technical Companion to "The Branches and the Trunk"

Abstract This document presents a deduction-based framework for unifying physics, biology, cognition, and deterministic reasoning systems by identifying a universal scalar invariant and associated drift law. Existing candidate invariants—entropy, integrated information, free energy, complexity measures, scaling exponents, constructor-theoretic counterfactuals, algorithmic information, and emergence—are evaluated against eight structural criteria required of any cross-domain invariant: scalarity, computability, harmonic structure, chirality sensitivity, bounded drift, composability, recurrence capability, and compatibility with differential dynamics. None satisfy the full set. CODES introduces a harmonic scalar invariant, PAS_h, and a drift law, ΔPAS_zeta, that jointly satisfy all eight requirements. Chirality provides directional structure, PhaseMemory provides identity persistence, and a legality mechanism enforces deterministic transitions. Together, these components form a minimal closure-capable framework for coherent evolution across scales. A deterministic implementation validates computability and recurrence through fixed-point arithmetic and a golden test suite. This companion FAQ addresses likely questions from physics, biology, cognitive science, computation, and complex-systems research. It clarifies the scope of the claims, differentiates CODES from prior attempts, outlines precise falsifiability conditions, and explains why minimal structure is required for unification. The framework imposes no new particles, forces, quantum mechanisms, or metaphysical commitments; it resolves the unification problem as a constraint-satisfaction problem over invariance, drift, and lawful recurrence. Abstract
