From Supporting Character to Sovereign Protagonist - Narrative Identity, Role Engulfment, and Non-Narcissistic Self-Authorship

Abstract: This article examines the transition from a life organized around service to others—“being a supporting character in someone else’s story”—to ethically grounded self-authorship, or sovereign protagonism. Drawing on narrative identity theory, role engulfment research, trauma literature on the fawn response, and self-determination theory, we describe how long-term caregivers, “backbone” personalities, and quietly responsible individuals often internalize scripts that erase their own needs and desires while stabilizing families, workplaces, and communities. We then introduce the GUFT/ΔSyn framework as a coherence-based governance lens to distinguish healthy protagonism from its shadow form, communal narcissism, in which claims of special moral status or sacrifice become tools of domination rather than mutual liberation. Using mythopoetic archetypes (Exiled Auditor, Paladin, Sage-Monk) as interpretive scaffolds, we recast self-authorship not as a zero-sum elevation above others, but as the inclusion of one’s own life within the circle of protection and care previously reserved for everyone else. The paper proposes operational markers of sovereign protagonism—self-inclusion, boundary literacy, shared protagonism, narrative flexibility, and repair capacity—and offers practice guidelines for clinicians, community organizers, and governance designers who wish to support this transition without reinforcing grandiosity or martyrdom. In doing so, we argue that a world of many protagonists, each operating under explicit commitments to empathy, transparency, and non-domination, is both psychologically healthier for individuals and structurally safer for the collective.
