Facilitating early detection of parkinsonian gait abnormalities by overcoming existing challenges
Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurogenerative conditions globally, characterized by progressive motor and nonmotor symptoms, including gait disturbances. Parkinsonian gait can lead to substantial social and financial consequences as the condition progresses, underscoring the importance of early identification and proactive intervention. Although early detection of parkinsonian gait can significantly reduce these burdens, it remains a considerable challenge, as the initial signs are often overlooked or misattributed to normal aging. Given the magnitude of parkinsonian gait, its associated complications, and its socioeconomic implications, there is a critical need to implement public health interventions that support early detection. Patients with PD are highly susceptible to falls and injuries due to gait abnormalities, further emphasizing the need for comprehensive public health measures. Such efforts should aim to promote early identification of gait disturbances and improve access to care, thereby reducing overall social and financial burden of the disease.
