Perception as Relational Structure

This work presents a unified, empirically grounded framework for understanding perception as a continuous and relational phenomenon rather than an object-based one. Drawing on research from psychophysics, neuroscience, cognitive science, developmental psychology, linguistics, and physics, the paper argues that what we call “objects” do not originate in perception itself. Instead, objects and boundaries arise from cognitive operations and symbolic systems such as language and measurement. The manuscript introduces a minimal axiomatic structure and derives eight theorems showing that perceptual experience contains no intrinsic divisions—only relational contrasts within a continuous field. The work offers a clear synthesis of contemporary scientific findings and provides a formal foundation for reconsidering how perception, cognition, and symbolic thought shape our experience of the world.
