Adopting a comprehensive approach to reduce the impact of Tourette syndrome on self-esteem and quality of life
Abstract Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental condition that generally begins in the 5–7-year age group and is characterized by the presence of multiple sudden involuntary movements and at least one vocal tic, usually present for more than 1 year. Children, adolescents, and adults affected by TS must face multiple challenges across different phases of their lives, which cumulatively take a significant toll on their self-esteem and quality of life. Multiple lacunae have been identified, which cumulatively aggravate the range of problems experienced by the affected person. Acknowledging the widespread impact of TS on self-esteem, quality of life, and psychosocial consequences, along with the prevailing gaps in response, there is an urgent need to plan and implement targeted interventions to improve the existing scenario. In conclusion, TS tends to impact self-esteem and quality of life across various dimensions of life for both the affected person and their family members. The need of the hour is to adopt a comprehensive approach involving multiple sectors, with the aim of moving towards an inclusive society.
