The Hellenic Open Science Initiative

The Hellenic Open Science Initiative (HOSI) brings together more than 30 universities, research centres, and research infrastructures in Greece to build a national Open Science community. Established to align policies, infrastructures, and practices with European developments, particularly the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), HOSI addresses challenges such as fragmented systems, uneven policy adoption, and limited researcher support. HOSI has played a central role in shaping the Greek Open Science landscape through community building. Its activities include the drafting of the National Open Science Plan and the organisation of national symposia, such as the third Open Science Symposium in December 2024, which brought together over 400 representatives from academia, industry, and government to discuss policy alignment, EOSC implementation, and capacity building. Within this collaborative environment, the Research Data Alliance (RDA) has been an important reference point. RDA’s early discussions in Greece supported the drafting of the first Open Science Plan in 2019–2020. Today, several HOSI members contribute directly by co-chairing groups such as the DMP Common Standard WG and the FAIR for Research Software WG. Through their involvement, globally developed RDA recommendations are introduced into the Greek context, informing activities such as the adoption of machine-actionable DMPs with ARGOS and the early integration of FAIR assessment practices for software. The outcomes of these efforts are lessons learned and shared approaches that feed directly into Greece’s evolving National Open Science Strategy. They also provide insights transferable to other European regions, demonstrating how a national initiative can translate global discussions into regional action while building consensus at the policy, institutional, and community levels. The lightning talk will present HOSI as a regional success story, showing how community building in Greece supports the uptake of international recommendations, the integration of RDA outputs, and the development of lessons that advance both the national strategy and the broader European Open Science landscape.
