A Simple Induced Order on Purely Imaginary Numbers
Students often encounter the idea that imaginary numbers “cannot be compared,” which can create confusion about what such statements truly mean. The goal of this note is to examine that belief carefully and show that, while complex numbers as a whole cannot be ordered in a field-compatible way, there is still a consistent and meaningful sense in which purely imaginary numbers can be compared. The motivation is not to redefine the complex system, but to explore how real number structure can illuminate a parallel, logically sound ordering within the imaginary subset. This perspective aims to clarify a subtle conceptual point often glossed over in introductory treatments of complex numbers. Author Profile : Kuldeep Jaiswal - Google Scholar
