Quantifying the Dynamic Trade-Off: A Comparative Analysis of Catalyzed Transesterification (PhytoGrid) vs. Catalyst-Free Imine Exchange (Hempoxies) Kinetics and Performance in Standardized Ultra-High Tg Bio-Vitrimer Thermosets (PhytoGrid vs Hempoxies
The pursuit of fully bio-based, high-performance, and recyclable thermosets necessitates a critical evaluation of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC). This study compares two leading bio-vitrimer platforms, both engineered with a standardized 10.0% effective carbon loading and a tri-scale reinforcement architecture: the PhytoGrid system, utilizing a synthetic DBU catalyst for transesterification, and the Hempoxies system, which achieves 100% bio-content via catalyst-free imine exchange facilitated by a novel Quadruple Function Modified Hemp Lignin (QF-MHL). We hypothesize that PhytoGrid will demonstrate superior thermal (Tg ) and mechanical (Ec) performance due to its catalyzed network, while Hempoxies will exhibit superior reprocessability (Tv and τ) and inherent sustainability. The research employs a rigorous characterization protocol including DSC, Isothermal Stress Relaxation, and ASTM D695 compression testing to quantify this critical performance-purity trade-off and inform the selection of the optimal bio-vitrimer architecture for structural applications.
