Optimization of Mild Steel Corrosion Inhibition Using Expired Ciprofloxacin with Eggshell Powder

This return to the native oxide state is known as corrosion and even though it is inevitable, substantial barriers (corrosion control methods) can be used to slow its progress toward the equilibrium state. This study optimized the reaction conditions that could influence inhibition of mild steel corrosion in acidic medium using expired antibiotic ciprofloxacin doped with calcium rich egg shell wastes. four-factors-five-levels were optimized within operational corrosion parameters; acid concentration (AC) 1–2.5 M, immersion time (IT) 1–4 hr, inhibitor concentration (IC) 100–400 mg/L, and temperature (T) 303–343K. Twenty-four (24) independent experiments were conducted and results analyzed using analysis of variance. The model generated F-values and p-values were 7.03 and 0.02 for W, 4.67 and 0.04 for CR, 2.99 and 0.04 for %IE respectively with R2 above 70%. Influence of reaction parameters was also studied as they influence the corrosion factors. The inhibitor was able to reduce the corrosion of mild steel in HCl medium.
