Etiology of sleep bruxism - a review of the literature

ABSTRACT Sleep bruxism, through its unexplained etiology, has become the subject of much research and discussion. The multidimensionality and complexity of the process makes it impossible to identify a single source of the problem. Over the years, new theories have emerged and others have been debunked. Reviewing the available literature, the plausible sources of bruxism have been collected and divided into three groups. It is not possible to determine which group is dominant, as the risk factors for bruxism are sometimes correlated. The essence of bruxism requires further consideration and research. KEY WORDS bruxism; etiology of bruxism; risk factors of bruxism; sleep bruxism
