From Timeless to Tireless - A Journey with Words, Vision, and Purpose

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more”. - Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Every journal carries the imprint of its past stewards. At TJOSR, the vision and dedication of my predecessors have not only shaped its journey but also ensured its enduring strength—a legacy I am privileged, yet deeply intimidated, to inherit [Figure 1].[1,2]Figure 1: Collage of Editors-in-Chief of the Tamil Nadu Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research (TJOSR), from its inception to the presentFROM FRAMES TO FOOTNOTES: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Long before I took up ophthalmology as a profession, I recognized my inclination toward creative narration. In 2008, while still in medical school, I directed and edited a short sci-fi film titled TIMELESS. It was a modest project, stitched together with more enthusiasm than expertise, the process of which nonetheless left an enduring mark within. The act of framing scenes, editing cuts, and shaping a narrative revealed to me the transformative strength of creative expression. Little did I realize then that, this early experiment was scripting the foundation of a lifelong academic relationship with words, vision, and purpose. That same curiosity and passion for intellectual pursuit slowly evolved from camera frames to scientific manuscripts. What began as cinematic scripts eventually became research articles and semantic editorials. The tools changed, but the essence remained: to observe, interpret, and communicate ideas in ways that could inform, inspire, and make a difference. REJECTIONS, RESILIENCE, AND THE FIRST BREAKTHROUGH: A PERSONAL REFLECTION Fast forward to 2020—a year that altered the rhythm of the entire world. The COVID-19 pandemic left appointment books sparse and daily routines disrupted. Yet, within that uncertainty, emerged an opportunity to write. What began as an earnest step into the world of PubMed-indexed submissions was anything but smooth. Early manuscripts met rejection after rejection; each email of refusal stung, but giving up was never an option. Revisions, relearning, and resubmissions followed in steady rhythm, guided by constructive feedback and strengthened through collaboration with dedicated co-authors. Over time, the code was cracked—uncovering the principles of clearer structure, sharper hypotheses, and stronger discussions that transformed our work and led to the first acceptance. The joy of seeing your work published cannot be overstated. It is not merely professional validation but a reassurance that you belong in the academic dialogue. More than a milestone, it will become a scientific addiction of the best kind—to write, to learn, and to contribute. For anyone, who has been through a similar journey, the lesson is simple yet enduring - persistence has a quiet way of turning uncertainty into understanding, and effort into evolution. For young researchers beginning their publication journey, pay close attention to every case, procedure, and investigation-document everything. Meticulous documentation is the cornerstone of excellent clinical care and a successful academic writing career. You never know that one may evolve into a case report or highlight a novel surgical approach or bring to light a complication that sparks preventive discussion and collective learning. MENTORSHIP AND MILESTONES Behind every young author stands a constellation of mentors, and I was fortunate to be guided by some of the finest. Dr. Sharmila Devi, who identified my potential and uplifted me early on, guided my first manuscripts, and welcomed me into the editorial fold of TJOSR as Section Editor for Glaucoma.[3] Even today, she continues to guide me—including with this very issue. Also, I had the privilege of serving as Assistant Editor of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology under the leadership of Dr. Santosh Honavar, whose guidance sharpened my understanding of editorial discipline and vision.[4] I have often sought the counsel of Dr. Nirmal Fredrick, whose insight and encouragement have consistently illuminated my path.[5] Alongside them, the steadfast support of Dr. M Vanathi and Dr. Jeyanthan Soundarapandian offered confidence, refinement, and trust pillars on which my editorial journey has been built.[6,7] These mentors not only strengthened my academic writing but also impressed upon me the responsibilities that come with editorial leadership: fairness, transparency, and vision. With their encouragement, I went on to author more than 55 PubMed-indexed articles, contribute to 17 book chapters, and edit Oculus Res Gestae, a national compendium that was launched on the stage of the Joint Meeting of the 40th Congress of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the 83rd Annual Conference of the All-India Ophthalmological Society (APAO–AIOS 2025). Every publication added a line to the larger story, but more importantly, every rejection, revision, and review shaped me into a better custodian of science. THE ROAD AHEAD As we, the newly constituted TJOSR Editorial Board, assume the responsibility of leading the journal into its next phase, our collective vision is founded on three pillars: integrity, inclusivity, and innovation. Integrity will be upheld through rigorous, transparent peer review and adherence to the highest ethical standards. Inclusivity will mean opening our pages to diverse voices—from early-career researchers to seasoned experts—and fostering mentorship so that every author feels welcomed Innovation will ensure that TJOSR is not bound by traditional formats alone, but becomes a stage where new ideas and technologies enhance learning and readership. TJOSR is not merely a publication; it is a community. It is a place where curiosity meets rigour, where local roots find global resonance, and where each contribution, no matter how small, becomes part of a collective vision. EXPANDING HORIZONS As TJOSR continues to evolve, this issue symbolizes a reaffirmation of our shared purpose—to bridge vision with voice, science with storytelling, and regional excellence with global reach. We are honoured to feature the Guest Editorial by our TNOA President, Dr. Sujatha Mohan, who reflects on recent advances in refractive and corneal surgery, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the innovations emerging from Tamil Nadu’s thriving ophthalmic landscape.[8] Among the recently introduced editorial features, Visionary Vignettes opens this issue with a moving biographical tribute to Dr. Namperumalsamy, celebrating a visionary whose lifelong crusade against diabetic blindness, and pioneering efforts in community and tele-ophthalmology have transformed eye care delivery in India.[9] Equally compelling is our Featured Review Article by Dr. Parul Ichhpujani, which distils the science of Lifestyle Interventions in Glaucoma into evidence-based strategies for everyday clinical practice—a timely reminder that prevention and precision must walk hand in hand.[10] In our continued pursuit of timely and impactful dissemination, select manuscripts of clinical and academic value have been processed through Expedited Article Sessions, ensuring that crucial insights reach our readers when they are most relevant. To further enrich academic engagement, we have introduced new sections such as The Neophytes’ Corner, Quiz Quest, Crossword Challenge, and TJOSR Videos—now seamlessly integrated into both the journal and the Medknow submission portal—providing dynamic, interactive avenues for learning, collaboration, and creative participation [Figure 2].Figure 2: The manuscript submission portal for the TNOA Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research, showing the ‘Article Type’ selection interfaceThis issue also marks a step forward in TJOSR’s journey toward global engagement. We are delighted to include contributions from authors representing Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Turkey, whose original and review articles have added distinctive depth and diversity to this edition.[11-13] As we look ahead, it is our editorial promise: to stay curious, stay connected, and stay courageous in the pursuit of knowledge that heals, enlightens, and endures which resonates with our motto. “Strong Roots, Clear Vision, Empowered Members, Global Impact.”
