A HISTORICAL AND TECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE EVOLUTION: EFFICIENCY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

This paper examines the evolution of coding languages over the past eight decades, focusing on three central dimensions: historical development, efficiency advancements, and changes in accessibility. Drawing on secondary literature from computer science, industry reports, and archival sources, the study traces the progression of programming languages from early high-level systems such as FORTRAN and LISP to contemporary AI-assisted languages like Carbon and Mojo. The analysis highlights how innovations in compiler design, structured programming, integrated development environments, and hardware architecture have continuously shaped language efficiency. In parallel, the paper evaluates how intuitiveness, syntax design, and hardware cost influence accessibility for users across eras. By synthesizing long-term trends, the study underscores that programming language evolution is both rapid and multidimensional, driven by technological needs, market forces, and emerging computational paradigms. Ultimately, the findings suggest that future progress will center on balancing security, usability, and adaptability to meet increasingly complex software demands.
