A Case Series of Rhino-orbital Cerebral Mucormycosis in COVID-19 Patients
Abstract Rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis is a deadly opportunistic infection that arises from moulds in the Mucorales order, typically the Rhizopus species. The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a recent surge in the number of cases of mucormycosis, which carries a mortality rate of up to 50% even after treatment. The development of comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and immunosuppression, often caused by corticosteroid use, contributes to the emergence of this fatal opportunistic infection. Aggressive management of these comorbidities is essential, along with cautious administration of steroids in treating COVID-19 patients, to prevent the onset of this lethal opportunistic infection.
