ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF AGUA NUEVA AND PIMIENTA SHALE FORMATIONS DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO

At present, no type of energy generation can be considered entirely environmentally friendly. This article discusses the strategic role of shale hydrocarbons in Mexico’s transition toward truly renewable energy sources. Until recently, the development of the Pimienta shale formation through hydraulic fracturing (fracking) faced an informal prohibition in Mexico. However, advances in extraction technologies successfully applied in the United States and Argentina—make it possible to achieve both economic profitability and environmental safety in shale hydrocarbon production. The implementation of shale projects in Mexico could become a key driver of national economic growth, ensure energy independence, and provide financial resources for future investments in genuinely “green” energy development.
