The Impact of Emotional State on Tennis Performance: An Examination of the Relationship Between Performance and Emotional State

AbsractThe aim of this study was to examine the relationship between tennis players’ emotional states and tennis performance. A total of 41 tennis players, 24 males and 17 females, aged 13 years and older, affiliated to the Turkish Tennis Federation, who had been playing tennis for at least 5 years, participated in the study. “Personal Information Form”, ‘State and Trait Optimal Performance Mood Scale’ developed by Jackson and Eklund and i-court system of Turkish Tennis Federation were used as data collection tools. Data were analyzed using t-test and Pearson correlation to examine the differences and relationships between variables. Normality of the variables was examined by Shapiro-Wilk test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and q-q plot. According to the results of the study, there was no significant difference between tennis performance and emotional state of tennis athletes according to gender (p>0.05). There was no difference between performance and emotional state in female tennis players (p>0.05), whereas a positive and moderate relationship was found in male tennis players (p<0.001). A moderate and positive relationship was found between tennis performance and performance mood in all tennis athletes (p<0.001). Anahtar Kelimeler: Öz Araştırmanın amacı, tenisçilerin duygu durumları ile tenis performansları arasındaki ilişkileri incelemektir. Araştırmaya Türkiye Tenis Federasyonu’na bağlı, en az 5 yıl tenis oynayan, 13 yaş ve üzeri 24’ü erkek, 17’si kadın toplam 41 tenisçi gönüllü katıldı. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak “Kişisel Bilgi Formu”, Jackson ve Eklund tarafından geliştirilen “Durumluk ve Sürekli Optimal Performans Duygu Durum Ölçeği” ve Türkiye Tenis Federasyonunun i-kort sistemi kullanılmıştır.
