GST IMPLEMENTATION AND ITS IMPACT ON INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT: ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVES FROM INDIA
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced in India in 2017, represents a landmark reform in the country’s indirect taxation system, aimed at creating a unified, transparent, and efficient tax structure. This paper examines the impact of GST implementation on industrial development and the broader economy, analyzing its effects on manufacturing, service sectors, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Prior to GST, India’s tax system was characterized by multiple central and state-level levies, leading to cascading taxes, compliance complexities, and logistical inefficiencies that hindered industrial growth. GST has streamlined taxation by subsuming various indirect taxes, enabling input tax credit across the supply chain, standardizing rates, and facilitating interstate trade. The reform has improved operational efficiency, reduced production costs, encouraged formalization, and enhanced competitiveness for industries, while promoting a more predictable revenue system for the government. Despite initial challenges, including compliance adaptation and technology integration, GST has emerged as a catalyst for industrial growth, ease of doing business, and long-term economic development. The study highlights the transformative role of GST in fostering a unified national market and strengthening India’s industrial and economic framework.
