Devastation of Agriculture in Punjab Due to Floods

Punjab — one of South Asia’s most productive agricultural regions— has faced recurrent flood shocks in recent years that haveinflicted large-scale damage to crops, soils, infrastructure andrural livelihoods. This paper examines the scale and character ofagricultural devastation in Punjab (covering both Indian Punjaband Pakistan’s Punjab where relevant), identifies proximatecauses and mechanisms of damage, analyses short- and mediumtermagroeconomic impacts, and reviews policy responses andrecovery options. Using recent post-flood assessments, mediareporting and scientific literature, the paper argues that floodsthreaten not only current-season output but also longer-termsoil health, input systems and the socioeconomic resilienceof smallholder households; recovery therefore requires a mixof emergency relief, targeted agronomic restoration, financialmeasures and structural disaster-risk reduction.
