India's 2025 Trade Restrictions on Bangladesh : Economic, Political and Strategic Impacts

In early 2025, India introduced a set of new trade restrictions thatdirectly affected the flow of Bangladeshi goods through selectedland ports, including the withdrawal of a long-used transshipmentfacility and stricter rules on the routing of sensitive imports.Although these measures were framed as regulatory adjustments, they carried significant implications for the economic relationshipbetween the two closely connected neighbours. This study exploresthe economic, political and strategic consequences of theserestrictions for both India and Bangladesh, as well as their rippleeffects on regional trade dynamics in South Asia.Using a mixed-methods approach, the research draws ongovernment policy documents, regional trade statistics, scholaryarticles and contemporaneous news reports to assess how therestrictions influenced export volumes, supply-chain stability andborder-market activity. Beyond trade flows, the paper evaluateshow these measures shaped political messaging, domestic publicopinion and diplomatic interactions between New Delhi and Dhaka.By situating the 2025 restrictions within broader strategic trends– such as India’s evolving neighbourhood policy, Bangladesh’sdiversification of trade partners and regional connectivity initiatives– the study offers a nuanced understanding of why the restrictionsmatter beyond their immediate economic impact.
